Let’s Talk Power Rangers
So, as I’ve become accustomed to living around people mostly under the age of 10, I’ve picked up on a few things. It is faster to eat with your hands, recess is the equivalent of gold, and really- who needs shoes when you can run around barefoot?
Yesterday, I spent the majority of the day going from cottage to cottage taking photos and getting information on all the housemothers to import to the Miracle Foundation database. It has actually not only been fun to interact with all the moms, but an excellent way to get to know names. I mean, I’d say I know at least 60% of the names….high five Katelyn.
Even though there are only about 20 pictures that needed updating, it took a while to accomplish. Not telling the moms I was coming (really, it wasn’t that big a deal) they were unprepared and were not in their ‘Sunday best’ – I mean…it was a lazy Saturday. As we are all guilty of hating pictures we look bad in, I gave them all time to change into their uniform (a beautiful orange and yellow sari) and played with the children in the meantime. I’d snap a few photos of the mom’s in their element (playing with the children) and playfully yell “HASO!”-“SMILE!” (Indians are really not the best at showing teeth/looking especially happy in photos) It’s amazing what laughing in picture does!
I went outside at playtime for a mini break and started playing with the children. I’ve learned a few things about playtime. First, I won’t, and will never, have the courage to play soccer with the older boys. Shoot, I’m scared to play soccer with 80 year old women, no way I would head towards the field with these firecrackers. I enjoy watching, thank you.
A group of girls were collecting themselves on the outside of the field and started to play a game in a tic-tac-toe looking grid in the sand. The object is to fling a rock (placed on the top of your head) to a certain grid- hop on one foot to that grid- throw the rock back out and jump to the rock from your spot on the grid. Hum…still trying to get the hang of it but I’m definitely intrigued!
As I was walking away, a group of boys screamed over to me. I turned around to see them yelling “Power Ranger” and individually running to do some sort of karate-jump kick-spin move- into a circle they were all forming. I laughed pretty hard at that. Power Rangers…in India = awesome.
The little ones find it entertaining to seesaw or play with dirt during playtime. Nitika and Priety were busy filling up a bucked of wet dirt and stirring it like cake mix. I found Kushboo (the youngest girl) allowing herself a “taste” and quickly brought her to the seesaw. Really though, who says a little dirt won’t do you good?
Regardless, it was a pretty entertaining and task filled day. Love the feeling of productivity.
So yes, Happy Valentine’s Day from India. I splurged and watched a chick-flick…maybe indulged in a Tootsie Roll or two to celebrate.
Much love from India,
Katelyn
