Happy Republic Day!
What a day to be in India! Today they celebrate Republic Day (Basically like our Fourth of July). It has been quite an event filled day!
The children went to school for only an hour – said the national anthem and did miscellaneous other things for the holiday. They were then bused back to the village to have “holiday” for the rest of the day.
Meanwhile- Susan told all the house moms to wear the best outfit they had. Susan and Pummi were telling me they were wearing saris and they wanted to dress me in one too. After my bath I went into Pummi’s room and I was “made over.” Pummi gave me a red and white sari – I’ll try to post a picture with her. It is quite an ordeal to get this thing on. Lots of twisting, folding, wrapping, tucking etc etc. Makes tying a tie look real easy.
We went outside where all the children were in lines in front of a flag. They had the flag of India hoisted and once it reached the top they opened it where lots of flowers fell out to the ground – really cool. For the next 45 minutes the children sang songs – as a group and one at a time. Some would sing goofy songs, some would sing romantic songs, some would sing sweet songs – it was American Idol in India. After that they handed sweets to all the children to which they ate to their hearts content.
The rest of the day they had to run around, play- be kids. No schoolwork today. I walked around and took pictures of many of the children and house moms.
Today was also Pummi’s birthday! She received birthday cake and all the children keep wishing her a happy birthday- she is without a doubt VERY loved around here.
I am resting now before I head back out to the playground with the children. At 5 I think I will also head to the kitchen to have at these chipatis again- I told you I’m a very determined person.
That’s about it from my end- OH! Austin booked his ticket to India for the end of February. Taj Mahal, here we come! It’s a good day….. -I also got my own person internet card (its still very slow, but hey, I can finally use my computer- no complaints here!)
So- Happy Republic Day, everyone. Much MUCH love from India.
