Yes, They Do Serve Breakfast Tacos in India
So, it has been my last day in Delhi. I leave tomorrow for Ranchi (on the eastern coast of India) to live at Sooch Village for the majority of my stay here in India. (Check www.miraclefoundation.com for more information on the Children’s Homes I will be working with.)
This blog will be fairly brief being that I basically did nothing today. Hurray! Jetlag set in big time last night- so when I woke up at 8 today and the entire family was already up reading the newspaper -I was kind of embarrassed. Regardless, I had my coffee and cookies (I later found are called crème biscuits, umm umm – healthy!)
We all kind of went our own ways for the next few hours. I jumped on my bed and started reading (Thanks for the Kindle mom- its been a hit around here…) and had breakfast. We had these incredible potato pancake things with onions and green scallions in them. I had 3….
For duration of the day, kids studied on and off while harassing each other in their study breaks. I would jump on the bed with one of them and read while they worked on Accounting and English. Paramjeet and the maid (who is probably not older than 14 and the most amazing cook ever) worked on laundry all day. They have a washing machine – kind of – thing outside on their balcony. You could probably hear this machine on the other side of Delhi- but hey, it works. While that was going full force, Paramjeet was still sitting on a stool hand washing many other shirts and pants. Pretty fascinating to watch. I did offer to help – you think I’d suggested I’d jump off the roof. So, no – I continued to read. (Katie – I’m reading Lovely Bones…creee-py.)
We had lunch out on the balcony where I talked to Paramjeet about Sooch Village and she was explaining how much I’d love it there. I’m pumped to have my own room/bathroom. I do now, but this will be my “home” I can set up in. IE- Not live out of a bad and tape pictures to my wall. The son excused himself to nap, then the daughter. Paramjeet asked me why Americans don’t nap. I told her they did, but usually only on the weekends. And, with that, I excused myself for my Saturday afternoon nap. After about an hour I set my alarm so I didn’t pull a “Katelyn took a 3 hour nap” and woke up to find the kids where still sleeping. I jumped back in bed and read more of my book. Can you say relaxing day?
Later in the evening I got to Skype Austin and my Parents – double whammy. It was great to actually see someone – not only that but to speak full conversations in English. Yes! It was the best part of the day, hands down.
We started watching more TV and around 9 we had our dinner. More Daal and chapattis. This time with what they call an omelet –more like scrambled eggs with peppers and spices. So, I was basically eating breakfast tacos. It reminded me of Taco Cabana – awesome.
We sat around and chatted for a while when we all kind of dosed off to bed. That is where I am now…and where I am about to crash.
Off to Ranchi in the morning. I will update as soon as I can.
Much love from India,
Katelyn
